Abhyaṅga is the procedure of applying Sneha Dravya externally over the body with various movement. It is an important part of Dinacharya to preserve the health and strengthen the body.
Benefits Of Sarvanga Abhyanga
- According to Sushruta Saṁhitā
अभ्यङ ् गो र्ािमकरः कफवातसनरोधनः ।
धातूनाां पुसष्टजननो र्ृजावर्मबलप्रिः ॥ (सु – सच – २४/३०)
Abhyaṅga softens the body, pacifies Kapha and Vāta Dosha. It nourishes the Dhātus and provides cleanliness, good complexion and strength.

Vishesh Abhyanga
सशरः श्रवर्पािेषु तां सवशेषेर् शीलयेत् ॥ (अ.हृ.- सू -२)
Abhyanga should especially be done on the head, ears and feet.
Generally, Sarvanga Abhyanga should be done daily as part of Dinacharya.
However, if it cannot be followed daily, at least the head, ears and feet should be massaged with oil.
Indications of Abhyanga: Samanya Snehana Yogya
- As part of Dinacharya or Purvakarma of Panchakarma before Svedana.
- It may be used as part of Pradhanakarma or Pashchatkarma in specific condtions.
- Mutra(urine disorders), Purisha(feacal matter), Retasa (semen)& Nidra(sleep) Vegadharana

Contraindications of Abhyangam
- Sama Dosha(toxins)
- Ajirna(Indigestion)
- Taruṇa Jvara(Fever of 2-3days).
If Abhyanga is done in these conditions, it causes severe diseases.
– After Vamana(Emesis), Virechana(Purgation) or Niruha Basti; if Abhyanga is done on the same day, it causes Agnimandya and produces diseases.

Method of Abhyanga:
- Abhyanga should be done with warm Sneha or Siddha Sneha Dravya.
- Abhyanga should be done slowly, gently and in the direction of hair follicles.
- Abhyanga should specifically be done on the head, ears and feet.
For Shiro-abhyanga, cold or lukewarm oil may also be used. The head is the seat of the sense organs and is one of the most vital parts, so it should be protected from heat.
In Shita Kala, Abhyanga should be done with Uṣhna Virya Dravya; in Ushna Kala, it should be done with Shita Virya Dravya.
